Methanol Production and FiKS Plant

Emergency Shutdown System for Methanol Production (Unit M-750)

Activities: Designing

Design: Middle and upper level of the system is based on Delta V system by Emerson Process Management.

System Title

Emergency Shutdown System for Methanol Production (Unit M-750)

Purpose of System Development

Enhancement of the system reliability by replacing out-of-date ESD devices with new ones. Minimizing losses from unplanned production shutdown and prevention of emergency situations.

Description of Automation

Methanol production consists of the following stages:

  • Compression of natural gas by a centrifugal compressor
  • Two degree natural gas stripping from sulfur compound (hydrogenation and adsorption)
  • Catalytic conversion (reforming) of hydrocarbons of stripped natural gas with water steam in a tube heater
  • Centrifugal compression of the obtained syngas with the consequent transfer of syngas to circulation compressor inlet for methanol synthesis
  • Methanol synthesis
  • Two stage rectification of crude methanol

System Functions

  • Finding the prime cause for process shutdown
  • Warning on emergency situations coming up when there is some deviation from the ultimate permissible values in all operation modes
  • Control of fast operating devices closing the flow
  • Safe shutdown or transfer of process flow into safe state as per preset program
  • Displaying process flow charts with parameters, emergency and warning messages and trends

Design

ESD system for methanol production unit M-750 is based on DeltaV microchips by Emerson Process Management and manufactured using logic units DeltaV SIS corresponding to SIL-3 and international safety standard IEC 61511.
